On an email, a couple of years back Andy at Arlen asked: "When am I going to make my 'pop' album?!!"

I started writing and recording this album as Roy(Melodiegroup) was embarking on his brilliant 'Being and Nothingness' record. We shared studio time and both added ideas to each others music, often it was just a note here or there but it definitely added to the process. It was clear that both our albums were heading to slightly different places subjectwise and sonically but there was a common thread..and we're both obsessed with details and melody.

In my head, this WAS going to be my 'pop' record but I've always written far more in the Winter months and the melancholy tones always tend to creep in eventually and inevitably. I allowed myself to be more nostalgic with some of these songs, honing in on distinct memories. Reaching my mid-40s I finally felt at ease with nostalgia.

I wanted to write and record without second-guessing myself too much, as I always do on 4track recordings. I had a lot of the immediacy of Micheal Head, Magnetic Fields and always Forster and McClennan as touchstones.

Amy once again came up with beautiful artwork. We never really speak, its a series of emails and ideas sent back and forth but she always captures the essence of the music. It's a lovely surprise when the finished artwork arrives.

    As for the recordings...

Roy put lyrics to the last track and really it pulled the whole thing together, summing up the thought processes of midlife perfectly.

Adam came over from Japan for a few days mid recording and put some great bass and drums )on a few tracks which really kicked things along.

Along the way, John Hannon guided the whole album in the studio and Leighton and Michelle added valuable parts.

I hope to put the record out on CD and vinyl at some point. Andy & Tina must lose money on every release they stick out of mine and but I'm forever grateful for their support.
Someone said to me it's not a 'proper' release if it's not on vinyl and in a sensitive moment I dwelt on that for a while. I've come to the conclusion that music is still music however you listen to it.

Thanks to anyone who listens to or buys any of the records or reads these ramblings-i really do appreciate it. It's a funny old thing making music, especially when you've been doing it for this long!
